Usage

Dev-C++ is a free full-featured integrated development environment (IDE) distributed under the GNU General Public License for programming in C and C++. It is written in Delphi.

It is bundled with, and uses, the MinGW or TDM-GCC 64bit port of the GCC as its compiler. Cook yourself thin cake recipes. Dev-C++ can also be used in combination with Cygwin or any other GCC-based compiler.[1]

Aug 07, 2015  wxDev-C Portable is the portable version of wxDev-C The portable version has derived from the devcpp-portable.sourceforge.net project, with wx2.9.3, TDM-GCC MinGW 4.6.1 and with wxctb 0.8 for the wxDevcpp extension -V7.4.2 and newer.

Dev-C++ is generally considered a Windows-only program, but there are attempts to create a Linux version: header files and path delimiters are switchable between platforms.

Devpaks[edit]

An additional aspect of Dev-C++ is its use of DevPaks: packaged extensions on the programming environment with additional libraries, templates, and utilities. DevPaks often contain, but are not limited to, GUI utilities, including popular toolkits such as GTK+, wxWidgets, and FLTK. Other DevPaks include libraries for more advanced function use. Users of Dev-C++ can download additional libraries, or packages of code that increase the scope and functionality of Dev-C++, such as graphics, compression, animation, sound support and many more. Users can create Devpaks and host them for free on the site. Also, they are not limited to use with Dev-C++ - the site says 'A typical devpak will work with any MinGW distribution (with any IDE for MinGW)'.

Development status[edit]

From February 22, 2005 to June 2011 the project was not noticeably active, with no news posted nor any updated versions released. In a 2006 forum post, lead developer Colin Laplace stated that he was busy with real-life issues and did not have time to continue development of Dev-C++.[2]

There are two forks of Dev-C++ since then: wxDev-C++ and the Orwell version.

wxDev-C++ is a development team that has taken Dev-C++ and added new features such as support for multiple compilers and a RAD designer for wxWidgets applications.

On June 30, 2011 an unofficial version 4.9.9.3 of Dev-C++ was released by Orwell (Johan Mes), an independent programmer,[3] featuring the more recent GCC 4.5.2 compiler, Windows' SDK resources (Win32 and D3D), numerous bugfixes, and improved stability. On August 27, after five years of officially being in a beta stage, version 5.0 was released.[4] This version also has its own separate SourceForge[5] page since version 5.0.0.5, because the old developer isn't responding to combining requests. On July 2014, Orwell Dev-C++ 5.7.1 was released featuring the more recent GCC 4.8.1 which supports C++11.

Notable uses[edit]

On May 4, 2015, The Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong posted his Sudoku solver program in C++ on Facebook. In his screen shot, he's using Microsoft Windows and Dev-C++ as his IDE.[6]

It's time for a new series, 5.4 this time. The biggest changes are the inclusion of TDM-GCC 4.7.1 (you can still download the old 4.6.1 one from SourceForge), drastically reduced startup time, and improved code completion. Oh, and F3 is back.

Important notices
  • For ultimate portable programming, please keep using devcppPortable.exe located in the installation folder of the portable version. This launcher will tell Dev-C++ to save its configuration files in the same folder as the executable.
  • If you're getting 'Unsupported compression method' errors when extracting the portable version, please update your archiving program. The archive uses LMZA2 compression, which was added to WinRAR 3.91 and 7zip 9.04 somwhere in 2009. The latter is just as free as Dev-C++, so nothing is holding you back to extract it.

Orwell Dev C++ Portable

  • When accidentally clearing the code completion list, one is now given a second wind before the list is hidden.
  • Fixed an out of bounds error in the code completion code.
  • Fixed an error that caused crashes in Compiler Options >> Settings under Windows 2000 (and older).
  • Typedef structs now get formatted as 'struct Foo' instead of 'structFoo' in mouseover hints.
  • The debugger now preserves the current working directory when running programs.
  • Redesigned the compiler output formatter code, which now uses half the amount of code.
  • The mouseover tooltip now shows scope information too.

Choosing between 32bit and 64bit

  • The 64bit compiler will fully work op 32bit computers.
  • The 64bit compiler can do everything the 32bit compiler can, including creating 32bit executables.
  • The 64bit compiler can do stuff the 32bit compiler can't, like creating 64bit executables. It also comes with a lot more headers and libraries.
  • There is no single reason to download the 32bit version except for maybe file size, marginally longer compiling time, or in case you have to use that specific compiler for any reason (regression problems for example).

Dev C++ 5.11 Download

  • To force 32bit on all new projects and non-project compiles, go to Tools >> Compiler Options and select the 'TDM-GCC 32bit' profile. This profile will use the -m32 flag and use lib32 by default.
  • To force 32bit on already created projects, go to Project >> Project Options >> Compiler and select the 'TDM-GCC 32bit' compiler profile.
